It truly is a great feeling when the time comes for the first event for one of our customers after an install. It is the culmination of weeks, months, and sometimes even years of planning and work; not just for Lambda, but for the group themselves.

Cross and Crown Church has worked with us for many years now and has been faithfully planning, saving, and dreaming about what this day might look like. On January 1st, 2023, we got to see that vision come to life. A well finished project is what we got to see for Cross and Crown (C&C). It is our firm belief that technology should not distract and should instead contribute to upholding the primary mission of the organization and its events. With C&C we got to see some serious fun and excitement as the church settled in to their first Sunday and look forward to future day to day events. Let’s look at how this build came together and how it fit C&C and their vision for the future.

In building C&C design, technology selection was a key piece. The church had communicated a desire for new systems and flexibility but did not want a system that felt overbearing and in need of skilled operators or one that was over the top in look and feel. They didn’t want a system that would take over the look of the church but blended with them. In each request, we were careful to select technology that would uphold these goals.

When the US Air Force Academy Hockey and Basketball games were picked up for broadcasting to cable tv, they knew they had to up their audio game and called Lambda AV. AFA hockey and basketball have been historically fun attractions for those local to the Colorado Springs area and with the success of the Avalanche in the Stanley cup even more attention was gained by local teams. Altitude Sports wanted to pick them up for distribution and while Adam and Brian at AFA had all the video gear needed to broadcast, they were lacking proper audio.

Simple, Effective Cable Pull

After weeks of rigging and installing tech gear, it’s on to wire pulls at Cross and Crown (CC).  In preparation for starting at CC, we worked with their electrician on conduit layouts throughout the building to provide safe, easy places for wire runs.  We tried to plan ahead by leaving space not only for what is needed now but for any future wire that might be added to the building later on.
On this, as with many of our installs, we use a high-speed network backbone with fiber optic in between network switches to condense normally large groups of wires and provide flexibility.  We still have plenty of analog speaker lines, camera lines, and other cable runs, but it certainly helps to reduce the amount of cable in a space.
With a map of the conduit in the building, we were able to produce a list of all the needed wire runs. To streamline the process, we built a schematic listing the start and destination for each wire as well as any stops it needed to make in between! Once wires are pulled, we begin “terminating” or putting ends on them and plugging them in.  With the wiring complete and terminated, we get to move on to installing gear and racks, and beginning to move the final pieces into place to begin testing.
It's great to see pieces being put in place and equipment turned on! In just a short amount of time, CC will be up and ready to move into their new building, but for now, we hope you have a restful Thanksgiving week!

New Video at a Local TV Station

The phone began to ring and when I, Ryan, looked the caller ID read WJFW-TV in Rhinelander Wisconsin. I assumed it would be a scam call but answered anyway. On the other end, Marty and Walt from WJFW-TV were calling to discuss a previous article we wrote on an early PTZ camera design. The system they owned was a similar version to what we wrote about many years ago. When they saw how much we liked the system, they wanted to ask how we got it to work so well. I laughed, “We didn’t!"

Just a few weeks ago Lambda started a full AV install on a new building project! Over the last year we have worked to build designs, CAD, procure equipment, and test and program it all to work together in our design. Finally, all the behind-the-scenes work is done, and the install is in full swing! So, what are the first steps for Lambda when we come on a new site?

AVL Networking Concept

11/2/2022

When I (Ryan) was in high school, I took a series of courses from D20 as part of their tech pathway. These courses were all about becoming a Cisco Certified Network Associate. These classes offered basic understanding of how to setup, design, and configure computer networks. Fast forward to post college with a degree in Broadcast Video Production that I never thought I would use, but today basically all our Audio, Video, and Lighting systems use networks and use them in advanced ways.
Picture
When we first connected with Woodmen Valley Chapel (WVC) it was to look at solutions for specialty pan tilt zoom cameras for streaming.  However, in a passing comment the tech staff noted that they had many problems with their Dante audio networking setup, and it wasn’t in a stable configuration. Talking with the staff about the issue, we were able to present a solution we knew would stabilize things for them. This solution was replacing the older network switches with a properly configured set of Netgear series M4250 switches.
When it comes to networking today, the simple “dumb” switches, or switches straight out of the box, simply aren’t enough for demanding, time critical, AVL (Audio, Video, Lighting) events and systems. So much data is moving around in these systems that it is absolutely critical to have switches configured correctly for the protocol or service being used. In this case, Dante audio requires large loads of audio specific timing and multicast settings to make sure audio is delivered on time and the clock is never dropped.

Bringing Usability to A School's Most Used Room

A local D20 Elementary school approached us at the beginning of summer looking for a solution to improve their gym speaker system for the coming school year. At this point, nothing had failed yet, but the system was getting very old and was not well designed for how they now use the gym space. The gym, for the school, is where they hold assemblies, do theater productions, as well as have their normal PE/gym classes throughout the week. It was in desperate need of a redesign so the system could meet these needs.

Multi-Campus AV Upgrade Strategy

Hope Chapel In Kansas City recently upgraded their two main cameras to Blackmagic’s new Ursa Broadcast G2 and, along with that, upgraded their Tv Studio 4k switcher to a Blackmagic 8k Constellation and 2ME Panel. Why the upgrades when their equipment isn’t that old? And what do these upgrades mean for usability?

Picture
Hope Chapel in Kansas City has worked with Lambda for many years now. With each new piece comes a talk about what the end goal is and how best to allocate equipment to meet that goal. This time, the conversation started with Ronnie, the church’s lead worship pastor and tech liaison extraordinaire, asking Ryan, our owner, about equipment for new small satellite campuses. A budget was set for those campuses, but it wasn’t very big. The central campus also was looking to take the next step after years of growth, but also without a larger budget. The idea discussed was to take all the campus budgets and put them together into a “hand me down” model. Brand new equipment for the central site, generating the most content and with the highest needs, and older equipment moved from the main campus to the newer smaller campuses. This model allows for larger gains in equipment and higher quality for all campuses involved. The key to this model is always buying quality gear and caring for it. Upgrading also needs to be done regularly, so that the gear being replaced still has usable service life when it moves to the new campus.
With this model in mind, the first piece to be upgraded was the switcher. The original switcher was a Blackmagic TV studio 4k switcher. This is an excellent small integrated panel switcher with 8 auto-scaling inputs and 1 aux. The system also included a 40x40 Blackmagic router for sending sources and destinations to other locations. The upgrade was to a Blackmagic 8K constellation and 2 ME panel. The great thing about these switchers is the sheer number of inputs and outputs. The switcher has 40 inputs and 24 outputs making a router unnecessary and improving usability. The switcher still has auto-scaling inputs allowing connections of lots of different camera resolution types. The switcher also has 4 M/E’s, or mix effects busses, allowing easy dissolving or embedding of sources to multiple destinations such as screens or streams or even complicated picture-in-picture arrangements.

When it comes to cameras Blackmagic has continued to make leaps and bounds in its products, and the new Ursa Broadcast G2 is no exception.
It is Blackmagic's most versatile camera. It has the same familiar frame but with a few key added features.

What Camera and Lens Combo is best for YOU?

We often break down entire video systems and give you an overview of everything we did on an install. This time we wanted to provide you with a glimpse into some of the thought processes of deciding what gear you should choose and how different combinations of equipment can change the result of your production.
While there is no wrong answer to what camera or lens you should select, you want it to fit your use case. When picking out the configuration of your AV gear, it can be hard to find the information required to even start to figure out what pieces you want, let alone what you actually need. We often see this come up with the Ursa Mini camera by Blackmagic Design. Blackmagic offers several Ursa Mini camera variations, and on top of that, multiple mounting options: Pl, B4, EF, etc. Let’s look at a quick overview of these.
