Introduction to Compression

What is it? How and When Do You Use it?

Welcome to Trevor’s Audio Master class. I will be your guide to the wonderful world of Compression. The definition of a compressor is, “An audio signal processing operation that reduces the volume of loud sounds or amplifies quiet sounds, thus reducing or compressing an audio signal's dynamic range.” I’m sure that cleared up any confusion on compressors. Any questions??

Ok, but seriously. These are questions that we often get when we are doing sound training. What is a compressor? How do you use it? When should you use it?

Making AV Goals

5/18/2021

Easter is just around the corner and it’s a good time to talk about making AV Goals. Audio Visual systems are an investment for your business, but sometimes it can be hard to make the final decision on when or how to invest in new equipment. How do you know which areas to invest in your AV system and what things can wait? This is where a little careful planning can take you a long way.
Picture
It’s very important to start with the big picture of what your business or house of worship is looking to achieve in the long term. It is a good idea to understand the ultimate goal before you start. Do you want to stream in the future? Are you hoping to move to a larger building? Are you going from something portable to something permanent? Are you hoping to have a video wall before your holiday service? Sitting down and brainstorming the goals for your company will help you make decisions about what is essential for your AV system.
If you aren’t sure how your future goals are connected to your AV gear, you can call or email Lambda to ask any questions about ways to attain your dream system. Sometimes we have items in our shop that we can demo for you. Last year a client tried out a camera demo and found that the setup they wanted for the long term was not what they initially thought it would be. Lambda can help point you in the right direction about an upgrade without wasting your time on quoting processes or equipment that won’t meet your needs down the road.

Cable Cleanup and Broadcast Upgrade

5/18/2021

In the middle of the pandemic, we all suddenly learned how good our video systems were or, in a lot of cases, were not. For New Life Church, a large multi-site church in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the video demands of a pandemic were high. A church of five separate locations citywide, with a moderate streaming presence, suddenly became a church with one location broadcasting five services. Along with the five services and all their other events turned virtual, they were broadcasting almost around the clock.
Picture
The Tech Director, Evan Duran, and Creative Pastor, Aaron Olson, took the challenge of streaming and ran with it, but their equipment couldn’t keep up. Suddenly adding different needs to cover worship, and working with the dynamics of five very different congregations and pastors was pushing a minimal, five-year-old video system to its limits. On top of all this, the previous generation video system components were still connected into the racks, with old, bad cable runs covering everything and creating a mess of complications and unreliability. It was a disaster waiting to happen! New Life Church wanted us to gut the system completely in one week and have them back up and running on a new system by the weekend. Challenge accepted!

Instrument and Speaker Cable Tester

4/3/2021

We’ve been looking at a series of cable and equipment testers recently. These tools help give us ideas when troubleshooting systems and how to proceed. If you know a cable is bad it is much easier to replace it than your other pieces of equipment. So, here’s another cable tester we use and love!

The Cable Tester 9000!
Ok well… maybe it’s called the Elite Core CT-04C Cable Tester. This tester easily checks the connection and continuity of XLR mic cables, TRS instrument cables, Speaker cables, Speakon (2, 4, and 8 pole) cables, MIDI cables, 1/8" TRS (3.5mm), RJ45 CAT5e, DIN, 3 Pin and 5 Pin DMX.
You simply plug each end of your cable into the appropriate connections and turn the knob to check each pin connection. LED's confirm each conductor continuity and connection status of each wire. This is such a useful tool for us! It allows us to check every connection we terminate before we install that cable on any job site. If we are having an issue with a cable this is a quick and simple way to check and make sure that the cable is not the problem.
It can be really helpful to have cable testers as part of your toolbox. They can save you so much time and sometimes turn a seemingly big problem into a simple fix.

You know the rule about sequels…They’re never as good as the original. But we are hoping this can be closer to “The Dark Night” and less of “Jaws 2”.
We love getting new tools in our pelicans, so we wanted to share what’s new in our toolbox.

In the video world over the past 20 years there have been many, many different types of cables and connections used to pass signal from one medium to another. From composite video to VGA and DVI, and now at SDI and HDMI. But while we have heard of these cables, what are they? And what do they do? Today we’re going to talk about HDMI and SDI.

So, what kind of Support are you looking for as we head into the New Year?

First of all, did you know that Lambda offers warranties on our installs? Your system could be under warranty for repair or a replacement at no cost to you! If it wasn’t installed by us, that’s ok, we’ll still find a solution for you. We’ve even added video service calls in some cases so you can get help quickly.
Welcome to the new year everyone! Most likely you had a whirlwind holiday season, and your AV gear was used a lot or was turned off for a few weeks due to shutdowns. Either way, starting off a new year you probably notice a few things that stopped working or you want to have checked out before you head into the next few months. That’s where Lambda AV comes in!
Another great way to start the New Year is to provide a Tech training session for all your staff and volunteers. This is a great time for a refresher or to bring new team members up to date with your system. Most likely you made changes to how you run your AV this last year, so it’s important to keep everyone on the same page. Whether you are looking for a more professional stream or help with Audio solutions, a day of training with a Lambda professional could be a great way to start the year!
