Cameraman's Quick Tips

This week you may have found yourself with new volunteer camera operators or maybe you are short staffed and are looking at doing more stationary camera shots. Either way we wanted to remind you of a few tips for getting great video shots.

Looking Room

Looking Room is the amount of space between the subject and the edge of the screen they are facing. You should have more room in front of the subject than behind.

Headroom

Headroom is the space between the top of a subject's head and the top of the screen frame.

Walking Room

Walking room is similar to looking room, but it applies to moving subjects. Moving subjects need walking room or lead space to move into. ​

Rule of Thirds

In photography, the rule of thirds is a type of composition in which an image is divided evenly into thirds, both horizontally and vertically, and the subject of the image is placed at the intersection of those dividing lines, or along with one of the lines itself. This rule helps to provide a visually interesting view of your subject.
