Pelican Tour- The Sequel

4/3/2021

You know the rule about sequels…They’re never as good as the original. But we are hoping this can be closer to “The Dark Night” and less of “Jaws 2”.
We love getting new tools in our pelicans, so we wanted to share what’s new in our toolbox.

This is one of the newer testers that we have added to our collection (Shout out to Pixel Pro for turning us onto this one!) This tool is a lot of fun! It gives us the ability to send out a test signal or pattern over SDI or HDMI, and also has the ability to receive an SDI or HDMI signal that can be viewed on the 5” touchscreen. This gives us the ability to verify signals to or from another device. But wait! There is more. This tester also gives you the ability to check the signal strength of an SDI cable. (Editor’s Note: Trevor is going to nerd out here, hang on!)
When you look at an SDI signal on a tester you see what they call the “SDI Eye” if your SDI Eye isn’t clear, then your video signal won’t be either. This is just one of the tools we carry with us to help us “Troubleshoot” a video system! It gives a visual picture of what is going on in your cable!

Picture A is an example of good signal integrity, picture B shows poor signal integrity.
Signal testers like these can give you great insight into how your system is working. They can save you a lot of time troubleshooting.
If something like testing gear feels a bit overwhelming to you, not to worry! We would love to schedule a time to do a training on your specific system and gear to help you get to know it better or more ways to know the best way to diagnose something when it isn’t working right! From there, you will be better informed to make the decision to fix something or to plan for a replacement. If you have any questions about what our training looks like, you can check out this article here or contact us anytime! We’ve got one more cable tester coming up, so stay tuned for another great tool to add to your pelican!
